How to Repurpose an Old Door As a Mirror
Old doors exude a character and charm that comes from quality craftsmanship common of previous eras, and if you're lucky, vintage or antique hardware. Sometimes these doors can no longer serve their original purpose, but even those with a weathered patina or crackled paint can be repurposed as charming mirrors. Does this Spark an idea?

More Than One Way To Repurpose an Old Door
-
There are two ways that the door can be repurposed as a mirror: by attaching a mirror to the front of the door, or by cutting out a piece of the door so it reveals a mirror affixed to the back.
Hanging A Mirror On The Door
-
A framed mirror can be mounted on the door using a nail pounded securely into the front of the door and hangar hooks affixed to the back of the mirror. A rectangle or square unframed mirror will need to be mounted using brackets on all four sides. These can be purchased inexpensively at hardware or home improvement stores. Using brackets on all sides ensures stability if the door gets bumped or moved.

Using The Door As A Frame
-
To use the door as the frame for the mirror, cut away a portion of the door using a hand-held jig saw, allowing enough space for the mirror, once affixed, to overlap the opening by an inch on all four sides. Sand the cut edge and use varnish, paint, or wood oil to seal.
Using brackets, affix the mirror to the back side of the door. Assuming the door will be leaned against a wall, it is important that the mirror is securely fixed so that it doesn't slip.
A Finishing Touch
-
For a finished look, nail or screw a piece of trim along the bottom edge of the cut opening. Cover the screws or nails with putty and finish with paint or varnish. It will make the project look more finished and serves as a small and useful ledge for the person using the mirror.
