Explanation of the Military Pay Grade 0-1E

Barring a couple of exceptions, U.S. uniformed services use pay grades to determine wages and benefits according to the service member's military rank. Pay grades are uniform and equal for all the different services.

  1. Division of Pay Grade

    • There are three groups of pay grades. "E" stands for "enlisted" and pay grades range from E-1 to E-9. "W" stands for "warrant officer" and pay grades range from W-1 to W-5. "O" stands for "officer" and pay grades range from O-1 to O-10.

    O1-E

    • Service members who are in pay grade O-1 and have served for more than four years in an enlisted or warrant grade (or a combination of both) are eligible to receive raises in their wages. Increased wages are determined using a special pay grade scale of O-1E.

    Understanding O-1E

    • O-1E is used to reward a service member, usually with a pay raise. It recognizes a service member's cumulative experience. O-1E does not affect a service member's rank.
