Chkdsk can warn you before your computer crashes.

Chkdsk, also known as Check Disk, is an application created by Microsoft and used with the Windows operating system. Chkdsk ensures your computer is running properly and thus should not be disabled.

  1. Chkdsk

    • Check Disk (Chkdsk) scans the physical structure of your hard disks, corrects any errors it finds and logs the errors. Common errors include bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files and directory errors.

    Location

    • The Chkdsk error log is located in the event viewer. To view the error log, click "Start," Control Panel," "System and Security," "Administrative Tools" and double-click "Event Viewer." Then, click "Windows Logs," and "System" in the left pane.

    Run Chkdsk

    • You can run Chkdsk manually. To do so, click "Start," "Computer," right-click "Local Disk" and select "Properties." Then, click the "Tools" tab, the "Check Now" button,and click "Start."
