Test Water

You can purchase pool test kits at most stores that sell pool chemicals. Read the testing kit instructions thoroughly and perform the necessary tests on the water. This will help to determine the necessary amounts of chlorine, acid and/or shock treatment to balance the water according to the kit's instructions.

Add Chlorine

Typically, chlorine is distributed automatically through a pumping system that needs to be checked regularly. If the chlorine level is very low after an initial test, add chlorine shock to boost this level and prevent unwanted bacteria. Test your pool water often and make adjustments as needed according to the instructions that came with the chemicals you are using.
