Needlepoint is traditionally done using tent stich on canvas.

Needlepoint and needle punch are both embroidery techniques. In needlepoint, you sew with yarn and a needle, usually on canvas. In needle punch, you use a hollow needle called a punch needle to draw yarn through the canvas.

Needlepoint embroidery is usually done in tent stitch, a small diagonal stitch rather like half of a cross stitch. Traditionally you would use stiffened canvas, but in modern times other fabrics are sometimes used.

Needle punch requires a different technique. A hollow needle loaded with yarn is drawn through the fabric, leaving a tuft of looped yarn on the surface. The technique is similar to rug-hooking.

Variations of needlepoint have existed for hundreds of years. Examples of medieval embroidery using similar techniques to modern needlework are still in existence. In its best-known form, needlepoint became popular in the 19th century when pattern books began to be published.

According to Folk'n'Fiber, needle punch embroidery dates back to Ancient Egypt. Hollow bird bones were used as punch needles to create lavishly embroidered clothes.

    Features

    • Both needle punch and needlepoint feature images and patterns built up from small stitches. The effect has been compared to painting with thread.
