The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) supervises the enforcement of laws and regulations relating to controlled substances. Physicians, pharmacists, drug manufacturers and distributors must obtain a DEA license to prescribe or dispense drugs. Each license holder is assigned an exclusive number for prescription tracking.

Applicants must also supply state license information and the type of business or activity for which the license will be used. Background information pertaining to controlled substances is also required. New applications are processed in four to six weeks and renewals are processed within approximately four weeks.

    Cost

    • As of 2010, the cost for a DEA license for physicians, pharmacies, hospitals and teaching institutions is $551 for three years. Treatment clinics will pay $184 for a one-year license. For distributors, importers and exporters the cost of a one-year DEA license is $1,147. Manufacturers are required to pay $2,293 for a one-year DEA license.

    Warning

    • According to the DEA, refunds are not given for application fees. An applicant who purposely or intentionally furnishes fraudulent or false information on the application is subject to up to four years in prison, a fine up to $30,000, or both.
