Are Gas Fireplaces Cheap to Run?

Are Gas Fireplaces Cheap to Run? thumbnail
Gas fireplaces can be useful depending on your living space.

Gas fireplaces can run on natural gas or propane. Both are relatively inexpensive, but how you use the fireplace will effect overall cost. Gas fireplaces can be fiscally practical, but there are a few things you need to consider to determine this. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Models

    • Newer models of gas fireplaces should be efficient, based upon the unit's BTU rating (British thermal unit) and AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rating. The BTU rating measures the amount of heat produced by the unit. Older, less-efficient models might not be worthwhile.

    Living Space

    • A gas fireplace radiates heat from one source, so if the space you are trying to heat is very large, it won't be efficient without some sort of attachments to spread the heat around. Inserts are available to heat air and fan it throughout the house. Gas fireplaces would make more sense for a small space.

    Location

    • Running a gas fireplace continuously can be expensive. If you live in a relatively mild climate where you don't need heat continuously, a gas fireplace makes sense. If you live in a frigid climate that needs continuous heating, a gas fireplace most likely won't be as efficient as central heating.
