Sudiac stoves burn coal.

Surdiac coal burning stoves are designed for use with or without the fuel hopper. The adjustable hopper plate is in the center of the stove and holds the coal that is waiting to drop, as needed, into the fire, according to the Hearth website. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Surdiac stoves are started by turning the draft control knob to the maximum setting and placing kindling on the grate, then adding pea-sized coal through the top. The thermostatic draft controls fire intensity. Periodically stirring the fire will clear the grate. When the fire has died and the unit has cooled, closing the flue damper will keep heat in the room from escaping up the chimney.

    Features

    • Using the hopper to feed the fire allows for an increase in burn times with less refueling required. When the fire is going well, the stove should be kept full or almost full. Only the coal in the lower part of the firebox will burn during this time. When the coal turns to ash, more coal will drop down and take its place.

    Considerations

    • To cure the paint and cast iron parts of the Surdiac coal stove, the first six fires should be small. Smoking may occur and opening a window during this time will reduce discomfort.
