What If We Didn't File a 1099-R on Our 1040 & We Have Already Submitted it?

According to the IRS, a 1099-R tax form shows "distributions from pensions, annuities, retirement or profit-sharing plans." If you didn't include the information from this form on the 1040 return that you already submitted, there is a simple remedy to correct the mistake.

  1. Amend Your Return

    • The IRS allows you to make changes to a tax return which has already been submitted by filing form 1040-X, also called the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You will be able to determine if you have an additional tax liability based on the information you provide from your 1099-R. The 1040-X form is available at IRS.gov and on many tax preparation software programs.

    Attach Proper Documentation

    • In order to ensure that your amended return is processed properly, it's best to attach a copy of the 1099-R form to the return, especially if you had federal taxes withheld from your distribution. You should also include any schedules that were affected by the changes. You can expect to wait eight to 12 weeks for your 1040-X to be processed.

    Warning

    • Keep in the mind that if you do owe additional taxes as a result of not including the 1099-R information, interest and/or penalties may apply.
