It inspects the physical structure of a disk to ensure that it functions well. Chkdsk can check the overall health of the hard drive and serves as an indicating tool for whether a drive may need replacing.

    • Chkdsk acts as a command-line application and utilizes a group of switches to perform and modify its functions. Switches /R and /F are two examples of switches in Chkdsk's command-line.

    Chkdsk /R

    • Chkdsk /R works with Chkdsk's command. Its functions include identifying and locating bad sectors and recovering any readable information. Chkdsk /R also includes functions of the switch /P, which checks the drive and corrects any errors. It also implies and includes all functions of the switch /F.

    Chkdsk /F

    • Chkdsk /F is a switch used with Chkdsk's command. Its functions include fixing errors on the disk. Different from the /R switch, the /F switch does not scan for bad sectors.
