House inspectors ensure that interiors and exteriors of homes meet established standards.

Houses have to meet certain standards imposed by local, regional, state and federal regulating agencies to be safe and to qualify for insurance or financing. Housing inspectors, also called building inspectors, conduct these site investigations.

Job Duties

A house inspector evaluates the electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation systems as well as the interior and exterior structures of homes. He notes infractions during his examination and presents them to the homeowner along with recommendations to correct them. His job entails reporting his findings to banks, insurance companies, regulating agencies or housing authorities.

Skills Required

Clear interpersonal communication abilities enable the inspector to clearly explain areas of concern or noncompliance to homeowners. Time management skills help the inspector efficiently complete multiple analyses and prepare related reports.

Preferred Background

Experience in construction or home building is preferred. Knowledge of prevailing building codes and guidelines is necessary. Background in consumer communications is a plus.
