Perpetual Motion Motor Information

The quest for a true perpetual motion motor--a motor that runs indefinitely without any external source of energy--has lasted for centuries. It is likely to continue for a while longer because perpetual motion is a physical impossibility.

Laws of Thermodynamics

The reason that perpetual motion machines cannot work is because they violate the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics, which describe the conservation of energy and the direction of that conservation. In basic terms, energy cannot be created or destroyed.

Magnetic Generator

The latest fad in perpetual motion motors is the magnetic generator. Magnetic generators use the repulsion between magnetic poles to create motion. Despite claims to the contrary, they cannot generate more energy than is required to run them in the first place.

Orffyreus

One well-chronicled example of a purported perpetual motion motor was demonstrated by German inventor Johan Ernst Elias Bessler, also known as "Orffyreus," in the 18th century. His 12-foot wheel apparently ran for 14 days on a single push, although the only person to see the inside workings of the wheel was his sponsor, Count Karl of Hesse-Cassel.
