When to Convert to a Toddler Bed

It's time to move baby out of the crib when he tries to climb over the bars.

While a crib is a safe option for sleeping babies, moving your child to a toddler bed can become necessary as she becomes more mobile. Be sure to thoroughly childproof your child's room after she moves to a toddler bed.

  1. Safety

    • After you have moved the crib to its lowest mattress setting, you may want to move your baby to a toddler bed if he is trying to climb over the bars. You could also try putting up a crib tent if you feel that your child is not ready to get in and out of his bed alone.

    Sibling

    • If you need your crib for a new baby's arrival, you can consider moving your older child to a toddler bed. Try to move your child to her new bed at least six to eight weeks before the baby's arrival, though you could also delay the switch until the new baby is older and growing out of a bassinet.

    Potty-Training

    • If you are potty-training your child, you can move her to a toddler bed to facilitate her getting up and going to the bathroom at night. Be sure there is a gate over any stairs if you are encouraging her to go to the bathroom alone at night.
