Hibiscus trees, also referred to as shrubs, typically grow up to 15 feet in frost-free locations. Butterflies and hummingbirds are highly attracted to hibiscus blooms, which are available in several colors. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Identification

    • Hibiscus flowers are trumpet-shaped and range from 4 to 6 inches in diameter. They bloom all summer in colors such as pink, yellow, peach, white and red. They can be single or double blooms with flared or fringed petals. The hibiscus' lance-shaped leaves are dark green and glossy in appearance. This tree has an average spread of 6 to 10 feet.

    Planting Considerations

    • Plant several hibiscus plants in a row to create an ornamental hedge; alternatively, plant the shrubs individually or prune individual plants to create a small tree. At planting time, dig holes that are two to three times as wide and the same depth as the root ball.

    Habitat

    • Hibiscus prefers full sunlight and well-drained soil. For the best results, consider adding compost to soil that is in poor condition.
