Is the Dwarf Burning Bush an Evergreen Shrub?

The dwarf burning bush is a deciduous shrub with leaves that turn brilliant shades of red in the fall before falling off. Unlike evergreen shrubs, the tree produces new leaves every spring. The plant is also known as winged euonymus, a name based on the winged branches of the tree. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Cultivars

    • Several dwarf forms of the burning bush include compactus, a hedge plant that became popular in the mid 1950s. Another cultivar, Little Moses, grows up to 3.5 feet in height and width. The plants produce small flowers in the spring followed by fruits hidden by the foliage.

    Planting

    • Burning bush thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. The tree prefers full sun to partial shade in well-drained soil. The plant can grow in other soil types, too, except for areas that drain poorly. The shrub requires extra water during dry spells.

    Problems

    • The shrubs experience no serious pests or diseases. Shrubs planted in wet soil might get twig blight. Since the shrub grows in various soil types, it sometimes escapes the garden and starts taking over other native plants in its new home. Some states ban planting burning bushes for this reason.
