When partitioning off a room, keep in mind light and ventilation.

With today's open floor plans, there may be many instances when you want to partition parts of the area from the other. In kitchens, you might want to create a separate eating area from the work area. In the bathroom, create a changing area. In a shared bedroom, a partition provides a bit of privacy. Partitions can be made of fabric, beads, glass, wood, shutters, shelving and even bookcases. With a little thought and ingenuity, creating partitions can be a cinch. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Size and Function

    • Consider the size and function of the room and the décor. In a modern bathroom with enough floor space, a glazed glass screen partition might work. In a kitchen, metal baker's racks placed side by side would be functional and create a room partition.

    Measurements

    • Measure the amount of area you have to work with. In a small bathroom you may only have room for a fabric wall attached along a runner on the ceiling.

    Drawing

    • Draw in the room area on the grid paper, one foot per square. Allow at least three feet of clearance on either side of your partition for walking and in the case of a dining area, chair clearance.

    Lighting and Ventilation

    • Take into account lighting and ventilation when deciding if your partition will be solid or open. In darker areas with few windows, consider an open bookcase or shelving as the partition to allow the flow of air and light

    A few Ideas

    • Attach and hinge wooden shutters to create a portable partition for a room. These can be stained or painted to match the room décor. They can be easily folded up when you want more space. Consider installing a kitchen bar, or a row of cabinets to divide a kitchen work area from the eating area. If you are contemplating partitioning an office area in a bedroom, living room or great room, a row of filing cabinets can be an easy separation of space.

    Considerations

    • If you are permanently attaching cabinets or building a half wall, obtain necessary city building permits. If you have young children, make sure the dividers are sturdy to avoid injury.
