Purple Beech Tree Facts

The purple beech tree bears the Latin name Fagus sylvatica but is also called the common beech tree. This slow-growing deciduous tree is native to Europe but now thrives in USDA zone 4.

Form

Purple beech trees have trunks that grow vertically and canopies that weep. In general, beech trees can grow to 60 feet tall but the purple beech doesn't grow as tall as other types.

Leaves and Fruit

The 2- to 4-inch leaves are purple, oval-shaped and die in the winter, but they can remain on the tree through cold seasons. The purple beech produces a dry, brown, oval-shaped fruit that attracts birds.

Soil, Sun and Water Requirements

The purple beech will grow in a wide variety of soil types as long as it is well drained. It prefers full sun and is mildly tolerant of drought.

Pests and Disease

This tree is generally resistant to serious pest infestations and disease as long as the soil is well-drained.
