How do Detonator Fuses Work?

The key to blast demolition is knowing how to safely trigger the explosives in the right sequence. Smaller explosions create a chain reaction that sets off the main blast. The detonator fuse is a key link in that chain. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Purpose

    • A planned explosion is a series of components. First is an electrical source, such as a battery. Second is the detonator fuse combined with a primer charge to form a blasting cap. Finally, the blasting cap is connected to the main explosive, such as dynamite or RDX.

    Function

    • Detonation of dynamite or RDX requires a sudden concussion or shock from the blasting cap. The detonator fuse is common electrical wire wrapped in flammable material at one end. The demolition engineer throws the switch and as electrical current heats the wire, the material ignites and, in turn, sets off the primer charge. That shock starts the chain reaction that leads to the main explosion.

    Versatility

    • Demolition engineers can design an explosion using different types of detonator fuses. Faster or slower burning material in the detonator fuse can create a sequenced demolition that can be controlled from a single point.
