Criteria for Navy Awards

Criteria for Navy Awards thumbnail
There is more to receiving a Navy award than you might think.

Navy awards aim to provide honored service men and women with the most public recognition possible. Though all service men and women are appreciated by the United States, doing day-to-day jobs in an average manner will not earn you an award.

  1. Qualifying for Awards

    • Awards are only for marines and sailors who have shown high levels of service, valor, heroism or achievement. A person is recommended for an award only in instances that specifically merit the highest recognition. You must go above and beyond average expectations.

    Eligible Positions

    • Those who are eligible for an award must be part of the Naval service, or be serving under or alongside the Navy. Specifically, you will qualify if you serve the Navy, serve the Marine Corps, or are in the Marine or Naval Reserves. You also are eligible if you work for the Coast Guard and did something to warrant a Naval award while under the Navy's control.

    Medal Approval

    • In Congress's name, the President of the United States awards and approves the Medal of honor. In the President's name, the Secretary of the Navy awards and approves the Distinguished Service Medal, the Navy Cross and the Silver Star Medal.
