What Is a Premium Domain Name?
Back when the Internet was new, the first domain names to be snatched up were short, direct and easy to find. When those previously registered names are released back into today's market, they are considered premium domain names.

Availability
-
There were roughly 93 million domains registered in 2000. Ten years later, there were 769 million --- an increase of more than 800 percent, according to Internet Systems Consortium. More domains on the market means it's much harder to get a desired name, making the release of premium names especially enticing.
Benefits
-
Premium names tend to be especially desirable because they were some of the first to be registered. Most contain .com suffixes, and many are simple names of people and businesses that match common search terms. For instance, recent premium domains registered at Register.com include ebusiness.com and beekeeping.com.

Cost
-
Because premium domain names are hard to come by, host companies are able to command a higher price for them. Premium names can cost a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars, depending on marketability, traffic and branding potential.
