What Degree Do You Need to Become a DEA Agent?

To become an agent in the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), you must have a criminal justice or a police science degree from a four year university. You must be 21 and be in good physical condition.

  1. Criminal Justice Degree

    • A criminal justice degree can be used in a wide variety of fields other than working for the DEA. Degree earners can become policemen, detectives or prison personnel. Employment by the FBI or other national agencies is also a possibility. The content of the degree offers broad knowledge in the disciplines of social science and physical science.

    Police Science Degree

    • A police science degree covers several content areas, including material that would fulfill the requirements for a DEA position. Students learn the legal system, criminology, criminal justice theory and law enforcement. Jobs that would be available for a graduate which a police science degree include detective, correctional treatment specialist and parole officer.

    Other Degrees

    • Though the criminal justice and the police science degree are the most widely accepted degrees for a DEA agent, degrees that specialize in drug related fields such as pharmacology and forensic science can be accepted to work in specialized fields within the agency. Crime scene investigation units that concentrate on crimes related to drugs are also acceptable.
