Does Color Affect the Permanency of Permanent Markers?

Permanent markers, whether for use by children or adults, are exactly what the name implies. Stains left by these markers are not easily removed by standard laundering methods, and the majority of them cannot be lifted at all. The marker's color, however, is not what causes this irrevocable quality.

What

Permanent markers are made to be used on a variety of surfaces, including paper, glass, wood and cloth. However, it is the stains in cloth, especially clothing, that individuals often seek to remedy. You may find that the stains caused by these markers tend to fade over time, especially with repeated launderings and sun exposure.

Why

Permanent marker stains usually cannot be removed from the surface to which they are applied because of two factors: The dye used to give the marker its color, and the solvents used to make the marker permanent. While lighter colors will be less visible as stains, unfortunately, it does not make them any easier to get out.

How

If you'd like to try your hand at removing permanent marker stains, there are several methods. Each involves treating the stain as quickly as possible. Applying acetone, such as that found in nail polish remover, is a popular method. Soaking the item in very cold water and changing the water every two hours is another.
