Scooters are called motor driven cycles in Lousiana.

In Louisiana, scooters are legally grouped with certain types motorcycles and mopeds under the category of motorized bicycles. Scooter operators must be licensed and the vehicle must be registered with the state's Office of Motor Vehicles.

  1. Definitions

    • Under Louisiana law, there are two categories of motorized bicycles, motor driven cycles and motorized bicycles. Motor driven cycles include all motorcycles and scooters that do not exceed five horespower. Motorized bicycles are defined as pedal bicycles which require human or motorized power and do not exceed 25 miles per hour on a flat surface.

    License

    • To operate a scooter in Lousiana, you must be at least 15-years-old and possess a valid driver's license with a motorcyle endorsement. It is illegal in Lousiana to operate a scooter on interstate highways, sidewalks or to hinder the flow of traffic. Scooter operaters must also abide by state laws which require the wearing of a helmet and eye protection.

    Registration and Titling

    • To register and title a scooter in Louisiana, the state's OMV requires a notarized certificate of origin or title, an odometer statement and a bill of sale. Scooter operators are also required to purchase appropriate scooter insurance.
