Coffee Biggin Cloth Filters

Roasted coffee beans In 1817, the coffee biggin, a squat earthenware pot with removable strainer made from tin, appeared in England. In later models, this same design added a cloth bag suspended from the rim of the pot to serve as a filter.
Morize Metal Filters

Paris In 1819, Parisian tinsmith Morize invented a reversible coffee pot with three chambers. Water went in the bottom chamber, with ground coffee in the middle. After the water boiled, the pot was inverted so coffee filtered into the empty chamber.

Melitta Paper Filters

Cup, black coffee, roasted coffee beans In 1908, Melitta Benz, a German housewife used blotting paper as a coffee filter. This new invention eliminated the need for cloth filters that left an aftertaste while creating a disposal filter for coffee.
Mr. Coffee

Coffee jug In 1972, Vincent Marotta invented the Mr. Coffee® brand automatic-drip coffeemaker, the first of its kind for use in the home. In 1975, Mr. Coffee® brand introduced paper coffee filters for home use, automatic-drip coffeemakers.
