Editing is now done digitally.

Video editing has become more and more accessible over the years with the innovation and development of personal computers and laptops. Much of the professional grade software and hardware are in the reach of the everyday consumer.

Software

Video editing software is manufactured by several different companies. The big players in this market are Apple, Adobe and Avid. Apple has created software such as iMovie for home production and professional grade software such as Final Cut Studio. Adobe has two versions of Premier, one for the home user and another for the professional. Avid is strictly a professional grade software company.

Hardware

The primary hardware tool needed for video editing is a personal computer, a desktop or laptop. Depending on the length and quality of the feature being edited, professional tools such as supplemental servers and pro-audio devices may be required. Hardware requirements such as hard drive space, RAM and processor needs will vary depending on the software.

Mobile Video

In addition to stationary editing and shooting, many mobile phones shoot HD video. Several mobile applications take mobile HD video to the next level by allowing editing directly on the mobile phone. Mobile editing is available with apps such as iMovie and Muvee.
