Function
-
Of course, your outdoor kitchen should be filled with several functional items. You should select the items that will allow you to store dishes and utensils, as well as prepare meals with ease. Outdoor cabinets, a small stove and an elaborate outdoor grill are ideal items to add to an outdoor kitchen, and items like light fixtures and kitchen linens will add color and design to the space while still serving a purpose.
Design
-
If you have a small patio, an 'island' shape for the outdoor cooking space may be best, since the stove or grill, cabinets and utensils storage are all connected in a compact fashion. For back yards with more space, the 'L'-shaped outdoor kitchen, which features a separate cabinet area for food preparation, may be best.

Considerations
-
If you're planning to remodel your home, it's a good idea to plan your outdoor kitchen with a contractor while you're renovating other parts of the home as well. This could help you to save money overall, and will increase the likelihood that all of your home projects will be finished around the same time. Also, it may be easier to include some of the same colors and materials in the outdoor kitchen design when they are available at your home for other projects; this way, your overall home design will look more uniform.
