Multiple theories of origin explain how life began.

The theory of origins is a debated topic with various ideas circulating as to how the universe and life was formed. Three main theories and versions exist--creation, evolution and the Big Bang .

  1. Creation

    • Creation theory is based in religion, upholding the belief that a supreme being, such as God, created Earth. Creation theory is noted in the biblical text and understood as a supernatural design in which all matter and life was created with intent in its current form.

    Evolution

    • The theory of evolution was introduced by Charles Darwin in 1859 in his book, "The Origin of Species." Evolution theory, also referred to as Darwinism, is a biological explanation of how organisms progress over time as a result of genetic mutations, which allow for survival of the original organism and the formation of a new species.

    Big Bang

    • The Big Bang theory of origins focuses on a random event that occurred in the cosmos approximately to 14 million years ago in which an explosion of matter, beginning with one atom and resulting in an expanse of galaxies, energy and organisms.
