  1. Classroom Training

    • North Seattle Community College offers a program in medical transcription that is geared to someone already working in the health field. Prerequisites for the program include courses in English and business, and good oral English, the school's website says. Students take many courses in medical terminology as well as courses in proofreading and editing, and communications.

    Online Training

    • Many online schools across the United States offer programs in medical transcription. Or Seattle residents can enroll in an online school that is closer to home. Bellevue College in nearby Bellevue offers an online program in medical transcription that takes a year for the average student to complete.

    Salary

    • Bellevue College says beginning transcriptionists earn about five or six cents a line, and fast typists can earn up to $20 an hour. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the hourly median wage is $15.68 per hour, and is about $19.27 in the Seattle area.
