Facts on Light Bulb Energy
The light bulb revolutionized homes when it was invented more than 100 years ago. But in spite of the advantages of this form of light, it is not very efficient. Less than 10 percent of the energy used goes to light; the remainder is wasted as heat. However, new variations are improving this dramatically. Does this Spark an idea?

Efficiency
-
There are several lights on the market now that offer improved efficiency over the incandescent bulb. Compact fluorescent lights use 75 percent less energy and last 9,000 hours longer. LED lights last up to 100,000 hours.
Saving Energy
-
If you use compact fluorescent lights in your home, remember that you will increase their efficiency and lifespan if you leave them on for at least 15 minutes at a time. And to save even more money, choose LED lights to use in or under cabinets or for task lighting.

Innovations
-
Solar energy is a newer innovation for lighting. Solar lights are popular for outdoor lighting and for seasonal lights, such as Christmas lights. They work best if the panel that powers them gets unobstructed sunlight for most of the day.
