Can Colic Be Prevented?
Colic is a common problem in newborns that puts fear in the hearts of parents. If a baby is crying regularly for long periods for no apparent reason, you are likely facing a case of colic. Colic is a mysterious phenomenon that is difficult to treat or prevent.

Possible Causes
-
The biggest issue with colic is that experts don't know exactly what causes it. Possible causes cited by pediatricians include immature digestive systems, sensitivity to stimulation or a yearning to be back in the womb. When trying to prevent colic, many parents try to address some or all of these possibilities.
Comfort is Key
-
Since prevention has proved elusive, the best thing you can do is try to keep your baby comfortable. Make sure the little one gets enough to eat; if you are breastfeeding, try feeding the baby on demand. Some babies prefer to be held upright. Sometimes a warm bath, a ride in the car or a bumpy stroller ride can ease the baby's discomfort.

Don't Blame Yourself
-
If you cannot control your baby's colic, do not blame yourself, as there is often nothing you can do. Make sure you give yourself time to control your stress levels, and try not to let your baby's crying drive you crazy. Most babies leave the colic phase at four or five months of age, so you may just need patience and wait it out.
