Can a Photo Radar Read Motorcycle License Plates?

Can a Photo Radar Read Motorcycle License Plates? thumbnail
Photo radar cameras can detect motorcycle license plates.

Law enforcement agencies across the nation and Europe are using photo radar traffic cameras to catch speeders without expending manpower. Instead, drivers are mailed their tickets and then show up for court.

  1. Function

    • The cameras are connected to a computer and a radar. When a car or motorcycle passes by, the radar checks the speed and the computer tells the camera to take a picture. The camera takes pictures of both the license plate and the face of the driver.

    Considerations

    • While the cameras can take pictures of motorcycles plates and drivers, they do not always come out clear. Weather, air quality and other traffic can cause the plates to be obscured. Since motorcycle license plates are smaller, there is an increased likelihood of obscuring, but it cannot be guaranteed. Also, faces of helmeted drivers cannot be seen by the pictures, giving them additional grounds for dismissal in court.

    Types

    • Radar cameras are not only used for speeding. They can also be used to catch people that ignore automated tolls. In Illinois, people can go through road tolls using an electronic device and avoid stopping to pay. If you do not have a pass and go through that lane, a camera takes your picture and sends you a ticket telling you to pay the toll.
