Summer EMT Training

Summer EMT Training thumbnail
You can take an EMT course over the summer to get a jumpstart on your education.

Local schools and fire departments often offer emergency medical technician, or EMT, training during the summer. These courses are generally more intensive because they must pack more information into a shorter span of time.

  1. Basic Skills

    • A summer EMT course will provide you with the basic skills required on the job. These include, but are not limited to, using medications, emergency childbirth, bandaging and splinting, oxygen therapy, patient assessment and treatment of shock. These skills will provide the foundation upon which higher levels of study are based.

    Practice

    • As students learn basic skills, they will be asked to review them as well as put them into practice. This is usually done with other students in mock scenarios that the instructor has created. This reinforces textbook and classroom learning while giving students the chance to ask questions as they are performing certain tasks.

    Prerequisites

    • Depending on your city and state, you might need to meet certain requirements to be eligible to take the basic EMT summer class. These can include immunizations, a clean criminal record, GED or high school diploma, and a reading exam. In most areas, you must be at least 18 years old to enroll in an EMT training course.
