Custom Website Building Rates
The cost of building a custom website varies greatly depending on your website's purpose and needs. Different designers can choose different methods of billing. There are also a number of associated costs to consider.
-
Website Rates Per Hour
-
Designers commonly bill by the hour. Rates can be as low as $8 an hour for someone outsourced oversees and as high as $500 an hour for top-of-the-line consultants. How many hours a designer spends on a website depends on the project, but a typical website of about 15 pages will take between about 60 and 150 hours of work.
Website Rates Per Project
-
Some designers will charge a set price to complete a project. Website design for a typical small business can cost about $2,000 to $6,000. Corporate website design usually costs roughly $10,000 to $25,000. Other more complicated "e-commerce" and database-driven websites can cost approximately $6,000 to $35,000.

Website Rates Per Page
-
Less commonly, designers will charge a rate per page. They can cost as little as $50 and as much as about $200. Usually, if a designer charges per page, it is for basic Web design absent of many custom features like Flash or e-payments.
Other Factors to Consider
-
When you're building a website, design is only part of the cost. Other factors to consider include domain name, which is usually less than $10 a year; hosting, which typically costs between $75 and $200 a year; and maintenance, which typically ranges from $500 to $1,250 per year.
