Smart computing can refer to several different computer-related ideas. There is a monthly magazine called "Smart Computing," a collaboration at Purdue University, and a type of cloud computing.

The monthly journal "Smart Computing" is published by Sandhills Publishing and started as "PC Novice" in 1990. According to its site, the journal provides tips and tools for users of personal computers in simple, everyday language. "Smart Computing" covers topics from common operating systems, such as Windows, to popular software applications, such as Microsoft Office.
SMARTcomputing at Purdue

Purdue University is conducting a university-wide collaboration to better manage the computer systems on campus. As of 2010, the school has 7,506 computers participating in the SMARTcomputing project. Some of the goals of the collaboration include better management of software patches, better distribution of software, reducing complexity and improving security.

The company Joyent, founded in 2004, offers a series of products designed for cloud computing, or virtualization. These products are all designated with the term "smart"--for example, SmartMachines, SmartDataCenter and SmartPlatform. Most cloud-computing technologies focus on the virtualization of hardware, but Joyent's technology focuses on optimizing software performance over a virtual network.
