What Is 1.3 Interpolated Megapixels?

What Is 1.3 Interpolated Megapixels? thumbnail
Interpolated megapixels enable cameras to produce a higher resolution image.

A megapixel refers to a unit made up of 1 million pixels, or the smallest units in an image. Interpolation, or the creation of new values, can be applied to megapixels to enhance an image.

  1. Interpolation

    • Interpolation produces a new value based on known values. When on object is rasterized, or converted into a pixel image from a vector graphics format, which uses points, curves and lines to form an image, all the pixels created between the vertices (image points) can be filled in using an interpolation algorithm. This algorithm, or mathematical formula, takes the value information from existing data and uses it to determine various attributes, such as pixel color, of the new data.

    Image Enhancement

    • Interpolation can double the amount of megapixels in an image. Certain cameras can capture a 1.3 megapixel photograph, for example, and interpolate that image into 2.6 megapixels. This increase in pixels enhances the color and detail of the image.

    Limitations

    • Extra megapixels produced by interpolation are not true pixels converted from an original image. Interpolation represents an approximation created by values of existing pixels, thus resulting in artificial data. Images produced using interpolated megapixels often are not as clear as non-interpolated images.
