Tutorial for a Magnetic Motor

You can build a simple motor using a permanent magnet, a battery and copper wire.

There are many tutorials for electromagnetic motors of varying complexity. The most sophisticated take some time to build, whereas the simpler models take minutes to construct and require only a few parts.

Types

Tutorials vary. There are tutorials on the theory of magnetic motors, as well as guides for making DC (direct current, as opposed to alternating current) motors with simple and complex designs. Familiarize yourself with the theory behind a project before you start. A good tutorial will list the parts you need and mention any safety concerns. Websites such as SciToys offer tutorials, from simple to advanced. You can find a basic motor that you can construct yourself in as little as 10 minutes. More complex tutorials include Gears EDS' "Constructing a Fixed Magnet DC Motor," which uses the practical construction of a DC motor to introduce concepts of electromagnetism.

Warning

Be very careful when building electric circuits. Use batteries, not mains power (power from your electrical outlets). Remember that wires with current running through them can become dangerously hot.
