Information on the Ford 427

Ford introduced the 427 as a production/race engine in 1963, declared the year of "Total Performance" by Henry Ford II. Ford, tired of losing to the Chrysler 426 "Hemi" at the drag strip and on circle tracks, developed the 427 to compete.

  1. Ford Engine History

    • Ford introduced the Ford-Edsel (FE) Y-block V-8 design in 1958 with the Ford Interceptor 352 engine. This engine gave way to the Edsel 361, which evolved into the popular 390 motor. The 427 epitomized the second generation of the FE powerplants. Used in the 1963 Ford Galaxie, it had an actual displacement of 425 cubic inches.

    427 History

    • The Ford 427 started out as the short-block, top-oiler, "high riser" version with forged steel rods. It gave way to the side-oiler, single overhead cam 427. Known colloquially as the "Cammer," or the "SOHC" (sock), as of 2010 it remains the most powerful American production/race engine ever built.

    Technical Specifications

    • The Ford 427 featured forged-aluminum hemispherical domed pistons and a special cross-drilled crankshaft. The cast-iron heads each had their own camshaft. The massive intake and exhaust valves were sodium filled to prevent burning. The engine produced 616 horsepower at 7,000 revolutions per minute (rpm) with 515 foot-lbs. of torque at 3,800 rpm. It had a compression ratio of 12 to 1.
