Effect of Temperature on Composite Decking
Composite decking is popular for its durability. It will not rot or warp, and some types are covered by a manufacturer's warranty for up to 15 years. Temperature will affect composite decking, so it is important to minimize its influence by making sure the deck is installed correctly. Does this Spark an idea?

Composite Decking and Temperature
-
Composite decking will expand in the summer with the warmer temperatures and contract as a result of the winter's cooler temperatures. The boards should be spaced far enough apart to allow for this expansion, keeping in mind that larger boards will expand more than smaller ones.
Degree of Expansion
-
To what degree composite decking will expand depends on the temperature at the time the boards were installed and the maximum summer temperature in your area. In general, a 20-degree difference in temperature will cause the decking to expand by an eighth of an inch.

Solid vs. Hollow Decking
-
In warmer temperatures, solid composite decking will expand more than hollow decking because of its greater mass. In spite of this fact, it is more popular than hollow decking because it is stronger and resembles real wood more closely.
