Your survival garden produce can be canned for later use.

Survival garden foods allow you to start and add to your survival food pantry stocks. These foods may be canned, dried or frozen, and some foods can be stored at cool temperatures without using any of these methods. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Foods for Canning

    • Many of the foods grown in a survival garden are canned for long-term storage. Tomatoes, for instance, may be canned as pasta or pizza sauce, or even diced tomatoes. Creating a vegetable soup with garden produce is easy, and you may can it all for future use.

    Foods for Drying

    • Other foods can be dried. Many herbs, for instance, are hung to dry. Others are dried in the oven. Many fruits are dried using a food dehydrator. These include apples and berries. Tomatoes are another good choice.

    Foods for Freezing

    • Many fruits, vegetables and herbs work well when frozen. Produce can be frozen by type or in a mix. It is easy to chop a bunch of vegetables, such as broccoli, carrots and squash, and to freeze them in a container for stew later on.

    More Stored Foods

    • Apples wrapped individually in newspaper will survive a good portion of the winter. Hard-skinned squash and pumpkins will last in a cool room. Store carrots in a bucket underground, covered with a bale of hay, to be used throughout the winter.
