What Is the Windows Defender Command Line Utility?
Windows Defender is free spyware and pop-up blocking software provided by Microsoft for use on its Windows operating systems. It can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. Windows Defender runs in the background whenever you start your PC and intercepts spyware that tries to invade your computer.

You can use Windows Defender to manually scan your computer for infections using either the Windows utility or the command line utility. The command line utility is a program that runs from the Command prompt. It does everything that the Windows utility does.
Why Two Programs for the Same Utility?

The Windows Defender command line utility provides more flexibility to configure scans and perform detailed functions that are not available using the Windows utility. In order to use the command line utility you need to be comfortable using MS DOS commands.

Accessing the Comand Line Utility

Windows Defender command line utility is accessible by choosing "Command Prompt" from the Accessories group in the Start>Programs menu. At the prompt type: "cd C:\Program Files\Windows Defender," then press "Enter." Type "MpCmdRun.exe" and press "Enter" for a list of commands to use at the Windows Defender command line.
