Mechanical Seal Industry Standards

Mechanical Seal Industry Standards thumbnail
Mechanical seal standards are set by the API (American Petroleum Institute).

Seals refer to devices used to join mechanisms or systems together to prevent leakage. A type of seal used with rotating equipment, called a mechanical seal, is manufactured based on industry standards set by the API (American Petroleum Institute). Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Mechanical Seal

    • Mechanical seals are typically used for compressors and pumps, due to the rotating nature of the shaft commonly found in such devices. Mechanical seals contain both flexible and rigid components that are spring loaded to allow a rotating element to pass through a sealed housing.

    API

    • The American Petroleum Institute is the primary United States association for the gas and oil industries. The API establishes and certifies industry standards for equipment and operations in these industries for the purposes of safety, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

    API Standard 682

    • API Standard 682 is the standard used for shaft sealing systems for centrifugal and rotary pumps, and it includes mechanical seal specifications. These standards, which often involve specific measurements, vary widely on the application of and type of equipment used in conjunction with the seal. Under Standard 682, all mechanical seals must include a primary sealing surface, a secondary sealing surface, a means of actuation such as a spring, and a means of drive or way to enable parts of the seal to rotate.
