Shredder Technology
The business world is full of sensitive information that businesspeople wish to keep private. Some things are risky to toss into the trash, where anyone could get their hands on them. Many businesses use shredders for disposing of private or confidential information.

Function
-
Shredders are electrical machines that tear through paper documents. Paper is fed into the machine at the top and pushed toward the shredder's teeth. The teeth, or sharp metal edges, act like scissors and rip the paper into pieces. The result is a pile of thin strips or confetti-like pieces.
Types
-
Shredders are available in a variety of types, according to the Office Guide. Strip shredders tear paper, credit cards and sometimes CDs or DVDs into thin strips. Cross-cutting shredders cut into the paper from multiple angles, thereby creating a confetti effect. Cross-cutting shredders are more effective for confidential information because the shredded pieces are smaller.

Basket
-
Shredders come with a basket to catch the paper that has been shredded. The baskets can be removed so that the shreds can be recycled or disposed of with trash.
Capacity
-
Some shredders can shred only a few pieces of paper at one time, while others can perform heavy-duty shredding. Heavy-duty shredders are more convenient in office environments that have high volumes of paper.
