Auto Insurance is an optional choice in Wisconsin.

In Wisconsin, the at-fault driver involved in an accident will be held financially responsible for any damages incurred. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will suspend driving privileges for any unpaid accident-related costs.

  1. Finanical Responsibility

    • Wisconsin does not require drivers to carry auto insurance. In the event of an accident, the driver will be responsible for accident costs if found to be at fault. Uninsured motorist must pay a $50 uninsured motorist registeration fee.

    Damages

    • Wisconsin suspends the licence of the uninsured driver until all damages are paid. Even if the owner was not driving, the owner is still liable for the uninsured vehcile. Proving that the vehicle was stolen releases the owner from liabilities.

    Licence Suspension

    • To prevent the licence from being suspended, the owner must prove that the vehicle was either insured at the time of the accident, make arrangements to pay for damages or dispute that the uninsured motorist was not at fault. Arrangements to cover damages include a security deposit covering the cost of the accident or making an installment agreement to pay for damages.
