Federal Electronic Transcriber Certification thumbnail
Transcribers of recorded trials and hearings can obtain national certification.

Many trials and hearings are now documented by audio recordings using analog or digital equipment. Transcribing the recordings is less expensive than the traditional stenographic courtroom reporter. The American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers offers an exam and certification.

  1. Legal Transcription Training

    • Unlike stenographic courtroom reporters, most transcribers of electronic media learn on the job. More than 100 vocational and technical school programs offer training in legal transcription, but many transcribers learn by taking entry-level jobs in law firms.

    Certified Electronic Transcriber Exam

    • Since 1996, The American Association of Electronic Reporters and Transcribers has offered a two-part exam, resulting in certification for those who pass. In order to be eligible to take the exam, candidates must have completed high school and two years of transcribing experience.

    CET Exam Contents

    • The 90-minute first part of the AAERT CET exam tests knowledge of court procedures, transcript format, and proofreading and vocabulary skills. The second part of the exam is 120 minutes during which candidates must transcribe a 10-page mock court hearing complete with title page, index and certificate.

    Certified Electronic Transcriber Certificate

    • Successful candidates receive AAERT's Certified Electronic Transcriber certificate. Certification can help a transcriber who is seeking employment.
