Homeland-Security Airline Restrictions

Airline restrictions include what you can and cannot carry in your luggage.

The Transportation Security Administration is responsible for enforcing the Department of Homeland Security's airline restrictions. Since 9/11, airlines are much stricter in terms of identifying yourself for travel, and what you can and cannot carry onto the plane in your baggage.

Identification

Adult passengers 18 years of age and older must show U.S. federal or state-issued photo identification. The information must contain the traveler's name, date of birth, gender and expiration date. Passports from the United States as well as permanent resident cards, border crossing cards and drivers licenses or state photo identity cards are acceptable.

Carry-on Luggage Restrictions

As of November 2010, items prohibited from carry-on baggage include box cutters, knives, razor-type blades and scissors. Sporting goods equipment, such as baseball bats and golf clubs, are not allowed. Passengers may not carry ammunition, firearms or explosive items.

Restrictions for Checked Bags

While many items not allowed in carry-on luggage are allowed in checked baggage, items such as flares and gun powder are not allowed in either type of bag, as of November 2010. Explosive materials, flammable items, tear gas, and toner and ink cartridges over 16 ounces are also prohibited.
