A license is not required for adults to pilot a boat in California.

Unlike some other states with licensing requirements, you do not need a special license to operate a boat in California. However, certain regulations dictate who can operate a boat within the state's waters.

  1. Age Requirements

    • You must be 16 years or older to operate a motorized vessel of 15 horsepower or more in California waters by yourself. This restriction includes personal watercraft. Boaters age 12 and older can operate a motorized vessel as long as they are under the supervision of an adult 18years of age or older.

    Boating Safety Classes

    • Boaters are required to pass a boating safety class approved by the California Department of Boating and Waterways if they are convicted of violating the Harbors and Navigation Code, the Federal Rules of the Road or state boating regulations. If convicted of a violation, a person must complete the course and submit proof of completion within seven months of the conviction.

    Time Restrictions

    • Riders cannot use personal watercraft of 13 feet or shorter from sunset to sunrise in California waters. This includes personal watercraft with proper navigational lights.
