Application of Lactobacillus

Lactobacillus is a bacterium that lives in the human gastrointestinal system as part of normal gut microflora. It is a rod-shaped bacterium and the group is made up of over 70 species.

  1. Nutrient Production in the Gut

    • Lactobacilli in the digestive system help break down food for the body to use as part of normal everyday nutrition. They also stick to the intestinal membrane and act as barriers to antigen transport across the membrane, which could cause allergies.

    Probiotic

    • A probiotic is a substance containing good bacteria which is eaten to help maintain a good balance of bacteria in the digestive system. Antibiotics, for example, can kill some of your own intestinal bacteria along with a bug that is causing illness. Lactobacilli can be drunk to help replenish the good bacteria and address this imbalance.

    Food Production

    • Lactobacillus got its name from its presence in fermented milk, or lacto, products. Lactobacillus acidophilus is used to ferment milk into acidophilus milk and Lactobacillus delbrueckii is used to ferment milk into yoghurt.
