1978 360 Dodge Engine Specs
by Justin CuplerThe 360 engine was a staple in Dodge's lineup through the 1960s and 1970s. It reappeared again in the mid-1990s through early-2000s. In 1978, four different versions of the Dodge 360 were available.
Configuration
Two of the four versions of the 360 engine were fitted with a two-barrel carburetor: E57 and E59. Two also were fitted with a four-barrel carburetor: E56 and E58.
Internals
The bore (cylinder width) of 4 inches, stroke (distance piston travels inside the cylinder) of 3.52 and 8.4:1 compression ratio remained common through all of the versions of the 360. The bore and stroke combined to create the total engine displacement of 360 cubic inches.
Output
The E57 model of the 360 had a rating of 155 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 270 foot-lbs of torque at 2,000 rpm. The E55 produced 155 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 270 foot-lbs of torque at 2,400 rpm. The E56 produced 170 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 270 foot-lbs of torque at 1,600 rpm. The E58 produced 160 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 260 foot-lbs of torque at 2,400 rpm to 265 foot-lbs of torque at 1,600 rpm, depending on emissions requirements.
