Plant Food for Hostas
Hostas benefit from a 10-10-10 or 5-10-5 plant food. These numbers correspond to the amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium contained in the fertilizer mixture. Hostas do best in soil that has been initially enriched with organic material such as compost or well-rotted manure. Does this Spark an idea?

Fertilizer Facts
-
Fertilizers for hostas are available in liquid, granular or extended-release granular form. Granular food should be applied periodically from April through mid-July. Extended-release blends should be applied in early spring, as they release their nutrients at three-, six- and nine-month intervals.
Liquid Fertilizers
-
Liquid fertilizers can be applied every seven to 10 days either to the soil at the base of the hosta plants or directly on the leaves, as recommended on the package.

Background
-
Hostas are perennial leafy plants with dark or bright green leaves variegated with yellow, white or light green and produce lily-like white flowers. They are easy to grow, do well in shady areas and are often used as companion plants for brightly colored annuals such as impatiens and begonias.
