Newcomb's Model of Business Communication

Newcomb's Model of Communication, also known as the ABX Model of Social Psychology according to Pennsylvania State University, views communication as a three-way street in which people relate to their environment and to each other.

  1. Orientation

    • The social situation in which the communication takes place is of utmost importance. At its simplest, Newcomb's model takes into account how individuals relate to their environment, while communicating with one another. It also considers the attitudes and beliefs of the two communicators.

    Balance

    • The theory is based on the idea that people require information to communicate. When the balance of information is disturbed, communication must occur between individuals in order to restore balance.

    Three-Way Communication

    • The relationship between the two individuals, known as A and B in the model, is imperative in their attitude toward X, which is the object or belief about which the two exchange information. How they relate to each other is just as important as how each relates to the object of their communication.
